Hello Everyone,

The institution of marriage is something that has been present in different forms across the ages and something which is common across all the cultures. It is a sacred union of a male and a female with prospect of supporting each other and coming generations. But when the age old idiotic concept of virginity comes into picture then it tarnishes the sacredness of this pious institution and makes it meaningless. Recently one of my blog friends posted a blog titled - 'Virginity, a gift to your man?' I have been thinking to write on the same but she beat me to it. But still I will present my views on the same. I would also like to take up the issue of second marriages in this very blog and the social stigmas attached to it.

In an extremely traditional country like India where there is a lot of orthodox viewsstill prevalent, a woman/ girl has to tread very carefully to avoid any social shunning. Virginity is a concept that is sadly very important to men about to get married. Why? I just don't understand. What does a girl being virgin has to do with a good future married relation. Some people might say that this means I encourage pre marital sexual relationships? Well I am nobody to comment on it because it’s a matter of personal perception. In my opinion there is nothing bad in it as long as the couple love each other and remain faithful to each other after marriage. But that’s my opinion and I am not going to enforce it on anyone.

In Indian society, and also in many countries with constricted thinking a girl getting engaged in pre marital sexual relationship is equivalent to committing the crime of a murder. I ask, why? What difference being a virgin makes to the married relation? Ironically, guys can get involved in all the pre marital sex they want and no one will lift a finger against then because for the guys it is considered ok. Then why not for the Girl? Why the character of a girl is tied to her virginity?Really sad I think. The character of a person in a relation is defined by how he/ she treat the partner and the attitude. But the society will never understand this because the individuals don’t understand this. In the opinion of the males, a girl has to be all prim and proper throughout her life, no matter in how many different things the males indulge themselves in.

There is also an issue of second marriage. A girl trying to do the second marriage is so much looked down upon, that sometimes I feel that she is doing a crime to want to get married again. The label of 'used' is put against the girls going for second marriage. Why the same label is not put against the guys going into second marriage? Why this discrimination? And we talk about gender equality through jobs and opportunities. There will never be gender equality unless these stupid notions lying at the root of the attitude and mindset are not cast off forever.

Just think a guy 'allows' his wife to do jobs but does not see her equal just because she is a female. Then no matter how much high level equality is achieved, there will be no gender equality. Coming back to the topic of virginity and second marriages, based on the way the society thinks I feel I belong to a illiterate community and not an advanced human race, I feel that the old civilizations when there were no concepts such as virginity (or at least not so prevalent), were much more advanced than the current hypocritical, orthodox and moron society and I feel I should separate myself from the individuals who think like this.

Judging character of a girl based on the parameter of virginity is equivalent to crime, nothing more. Let’s judge people by their individual qualities rather than on stupid notions. Society needs a different outlook on the subjects like virginity second marriages, single mother and fathers. Then only there will be true development in the society, country and world.

My article may seem like I am all in favor of premarital affairs, but its not that. What I am trying to say is that attitude matters and at the end of the day it should be the prerogative of the girl to decide on the matter and not the other way round. Society should not dictate terms to the individuals on personal choices but the person should decide for themselves.

Thanks,

Hello Everyone,

Topic seems a bit confusing, I know. More importantly the poem after it is completely contradictory. How come by being united we will fall. That depend on what we are united for, isn’t it? Give your brain cells a little exercise the answer will come to you as to the meaning of the topic.

I will start with a little history before the Independence of our country. Countries like Britain, America, and France etc were in the race for imperialism and colonization? Money, various trade items etc were the obvious reasons but there was one underlying reason that sustained the process if not trigger it - it was the belief that fair colored people were meant to rule the not so fair colored people. In this the entire countries were united. And look where that unity for superiority of color led the world to - Struggle for freedom and equality in so many countries, loss of millions of lives.

Coming down a level, at a country level, especially in a diverse country like India with so many religions, people of one religion are united in the belief that their religion is superior to others. Result of this unified belief - riots, bloodshed, loss of life and property etc. And most hilarious thing is people like corrupt politicians and unsocial elements take benefit of this unity and instigate it against the society to break the fabric of society apart.

Coming down a level again to the level of caste, within the religion itself there are so many castes and divisions and God forbid if a boy and a girl of different caste decide to marry. All hell breaks loose then. Torture, honor killing, eloping and what not start to happen. The youngsters are forced to leave their families for their own safety. Really pathetic in my opinion. Entire cast stands unified against such knots. My deepest respect to those families who go ahead and accept such relations and try to mingle with other cultures.

Coming down a level again to the society level, within which too there are so many stigmas and expectations attached that sometimes they become mammoth hurdles for the progress. Once again I will talk about the most debated topic - Women in the society. There is a norm that a woman should follow, should do this, should do that, should come on time, should were proper clothes, blah, blah, blah,. Nonsense in my opinion. Who made these people who sprout these nonsense and the leader for all these guidelines; can’t keep themselves in line and they are preaching others. Every adult person is responsible for themselves but then once again for society it is a horror movie if anyone dares to challenge the age old, rusty, rotten norms. Once again unity for a bad thing.

And finally to the level of individual, as an individual we make all the above unities possible after all in the end the world is made up of individuals. People say the world is progressing, but is it really. Progress in technology does not means that world is progressing, World will truly progress when the people's attitude will progress, their thinking will progress. That I see happening at pace that rivals the snail's pace. Why do we need all these destructive unities? I can see no reason at all.

Independence Day is coming, and like I have been saying in all my blogs it’s the individual that makes the difference, not the society and not the government. If you want to get something done right do it yourself. We are the key to solve majority of problems facing us, society, country and world. We only need to break these destructive unities and gather together in unity for the noble cause of strengthening and bringing human race together. Only then this world will truly live and survive, till then we are just wasting our lives inch by inch, day by day.

Hello Everyone,

After reading the quote above you must have realized what the topic of today's discussion is going to be. Its the pathetic condition of the roads in the city of Mumbai and all across India. Since I am currently in Mumbai so I will focus only on the Mumbai roads. I have been thinking to write on this for quite some time now but a comment from one of my office colleague prompted me to write it now. The comment he made was, "We need a Hovercraft".

And actually we do. Either that or we need to learn to teleport ourselves from one place to another so that we do not have to endure the arduous and painful journey on the roads every day. But sadly if the government cannot build good roads then they can surely not provide the hovercraft facility and teleportation is a fictional concept anyway.

The potholes in the road get even worse in the rainy season. The court has given a mandate to the BMC (Municipal corporation of the city) to get all the roads up and ready by the famous Ganpati festival but the question is will these roads be able to bear the burden of sudden rush of vehicles and crowd during the festivals.

I have been living in Mumbai for three years now and i really don’t understand why the road construction work always starts in the rainy season. I mean come on if you make a road in rainy season it will suffer a lot of wear and tear because of the rains as it will not get time to settle down and dry off. Sometimes I wonder what game the bureaucrats are playing starting the tenders for road construction in rainy season. I might be wrong but I have got a feeling why. If they will construct the roads in the rainy season, they will get deteriorated very soon and then the government can float another tender. The temporary fillings in the pothole get washed away in the next bout of rain. The fillings raarely last more than few days. On the main highway I have seen the same pothole repaired three times in the last month and it is still in the original condition sadly. It has become money laundering business rather than actual constructive construction.

Sadly the bureaucrats are amassing the money and it’s the general public which is facing the problems in daily life - slow traffic, delays, huge waste of time, accidents etc. So once again I wonder should we start buying hovercrafts or who knows some genius scientist comes up with a device to teleport us ;)

Sadly until the government and the bureaucrats wake up, get their heads out of sand and actually see the problem, we will only find road in potholes and not the other way round (which is slightly more better). So till then plesae be safe while driving on the road and be cautious of the bumps and holes of the roads.

Hello Everyone,

Every day for us is a judgment day and no I am not talking about the Terminator movie Judgment Day. I am talking about the judgment we pass onto others, over others and for others. We as human beings are taught to segregate behaviors, emotions, things and people into separate buckets and once we have done that anything outside that bucket or comfort zone is beneath us. No one is exempt from this, not one single person no matter how much saint they claim to be.

What I am talking about? I am talking about the prejudice we create because of the natural tendency of human mind to segregate based on experiences and fear - fear of losing the status quo. Just think whena person start learning skating he has a hard time telling his mind that while skating the tilting of body forward is natural and required and only when mind and body accepts it the person will be able to learn skating. Why it takes so much time to accept it because our mind is in the habit of maintaining of status quo and fearful of what if the conditions change. We are fearful of the unknown.

Coming back to the prejudices, some are pretty harmless and one should not actually worry about that. For example, I don’t like 'ghee'. I had a bad experience in childhood when I ate a very old and stale 'ghee'. Till few years back I had a hard time eating anything that had even the tiniest traces of 'ghee' on it. Does that mean everyone should stop eating that? Of course not and please no offense to the taste buds of people who really love 'ghee'. But a couple of years back I started slowly started trying out again thinking that not every time it will be stale and old. I still avoid if I can but that kind of aversion is no longer there. Had I maintained that status quo I would not have come near for the rest of my life? This was an example of pretty harmless status quo.

But when it comes to prejudices that affect people in groups it becomes serious business. We have worldwide example of segregation - prejudice was the reason why Adolf Hitler rose to power, he has a vendetta against the Jewish community; there was a huge prejudice against the dark skinned people in America until the segregation was outlawed in mid-sixties, Apartheid in South Africa, ironically only 20% population was fair skinned people who thought that they were superiorsto the natives. Did these prejudices do anyone any good? No it only caused bloodshed, deaths and hurt to the populace.

Coming to the present in our own country we have this cursed caste system where prejudices run deep. Marry intercaste and honor killings start to happen, the children are disinherited from the family. And then we blame that the government is not keeping the society safe. There are deep rooted prejudices against female community in this country where even today highly educated people think that their role is only as a housewife and take care of kids and family. And we wonder why this country is going to dogs.

We may blame government all we want but the politicians thrive on the segregation we create. They only fan the flame created by us. We say the government is corrupt but contrary to the popular notion it’s the general population us who is responsible for the majority of the corruption. We don’t realize it but we are the nutrition for these kinds of people. It’s not who they are running the caste politics, it’s us who created the caste politics; they are only reaping the benefits out of it.

Forget about thinking at the national level let’s take a look at the daily routine. When we enter the company mess many of us look down upon the workers and staff there. It’s sad to see the behavior of some of the people. Just because they are standing on the other side of the counter does not mean we can treat them with contempt. Who knows in future we are on that side of the counter. Hence I make it a point to say a 'Hi' and a 'Thank you' whenever I deal with anyone. You will not believe the happiness that brings on their face and in my heart seeing them happy for a moment.

So as we can see that prejudices run deep within us and we are the only one to blame for all the mess we have created. The people in position of power only use this mess to create even more power and profits.

We might have stopped segregation in form of color racism but we have started doing it many other forms. Segregation must go. So how many times have you segregated today? Have you been the part of the problem today? Because if you are not challenging the status quo and changing yourself, you are not part of the solution and when you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.

That foundation is Friendship, it is the root that strengthens the relationship over time" ( by Genie)

Hello Everyone,

Ever wondered the difference between a very good teacher and a great teacher? A very good teacher will always treat the people he teaches as a student. The relationship there is of a student and a teacher. But a great teacher treats his/ her students as friends. In this case the bond between the student and the teacher goes beyond the normal boundaries of a student teacher relation and towards friendship. It seems a very small difference but only this small difference is sufficient enough to bring a huge difference in the end results.

I took coaching classes for my IIT entrance exams. I took classes for all three subjects - math, physics and chemistry. The physics and chemistry teachers were just that - teachers - but the math teacher was actually more into interacting with students, trying to understand their problems and helping them in a much friendlier way. The difference? I was able to progress in math so much better that even today it is my favorite subject something which it was not at that time. This is the difference one component of friendship makes.

And this is not only true for a teacher-student relationship, it true for all forms of relationship in life whether it be brother-sister, husband-wife, parent-child, girlfriend-boyfriend, boss-colleague, friends etc. No matter the relationship, if the foundation of that relationship is not set in friendship then the chances are very high, that relationship becomes monotonous, stale and boring quickly.

It is a common saying that when a child reaches the height of shoulders of the parents, the parents should start treating the child as a friend rather than a child. And it is actually very true because that’s the teenage and at that time a parent can better understand a child by being a friendly parent/ friend rather than a dominating and overbearing parent. Once again we come back to the same ingredient of friendship in the relationship.

When we treat the other person as friend first and then something else then in that case there are a lot less expectations and even if there are expectations people don’t feel that much dejected and sad when expectations are not fulfilled. Being a friend first also allows people to share things which normally two people won’t share. This becomes very visible in the relationship of a husband wife. Both of them tend to keep less secrets if they treat each other as friend rather that a responsibility that had to carry through.

In professional life one of the best examples is the current HR on our floor. She has got an aura of friendship around her which makes working on the floor much more fun and enjoyable. I can say without a doubt that she is the friendliest, enthusiastic and energetic HR I have ever had the pleasure to come across. At the same time she can be strict and get her point across easily, something that cannot happen if that component is missing.

One of the biggest examples in my life is the bond between me and my sister. We are friends at a deep level and that helps us to share our grief and happiness alike. We don’t have to think twice before disturbing the other and we have no hard feelings if the other is not available. That’s the beauty of friendship at the most basic level. It’s my personal experience that the moment friendship dies out in a relationship the relation turns sour very quickly

So let’s strengthen the roots of our relations by nurturing them with the water of friendship.

Hi Everyone,

Take a group of people to a busy temple like Siddhivinayak and you will see that all of them will wait in a line for their turn for the 'darshan'. Now take the same set of people to a bus stop, a cinema hall ticket counter, a railway ticket counter etc, they will be ready to kill each other to be the first one to get their work done. Strange, right? But that’s how all of us behave, or I should say most of us behave.

We, in our country, have patience for everything in the world but not standing in a 'Queue'. We always want to be the first to be serviced in the horde of people, which is supposed to be a queue. We will even walk over people to be the first. In the religious establishments we become the most disciplined people in the world because we feel that there we are being watched by God and therefore better be disciplined. Many people also maintain queue in religious establishments out of respect for the place and God.

So if we can maintain queue there why can’t we maintain queue at other places. What's so difficult about it. I was once at a ticket counter at a railway station and one person seemed to be in such a hurry that he moved out of the queue and directly went to the counter. People shouted for him to get back in the queue but he did not listen. The people who were coming to join the queue also went directly at the counter and in a matter of few seconds it was pure chaos. Finally a constable had to come and maintain order. He stayed there for some time and as soon as he was away the same thing happened again. We need someone with a stick over our head to remain in queue

Sadly things would get done quickly if done sequentially in a queue. For example the person giving tickets at the counter will be less stressed and hence work more efficiently if people do not crowd at his window. We seriously need to develop this gene in ourselves because; just due to few individuals all of the people in the queue suffer. And subsequently people who want to maintain the line are forced to break that line because they will never get their work done if they remain standing in the queue.

Many people argue that they were getting late and hence they did not remain n queue. And who is to blame for getting late. We start justifying immediately but we should realize that 99.99% of the time no one but we ourselves are to blame for being late. We may justify all we want but in the end we were responsible for getting late and then disturbing the order. Only 0.01% cases constitute the unavoidable circumstances.

So as individuals this is something we all can easily implement and bring in practice. Let’s wake that dormant Q gene in ourselves. Let’s be part of the SOLUTION. Let’s be part of the Q and not the PROBLEM Qless creates.

Hello Everyone,

Recently I read a Facebook entry by none other than Amitabh Bacchan wherein he said he cannot step out of the house, attend any function, or go in public because there are billions of people wanting to know every single detail of their private life, billions of cameras in the form of press reporters, smartphones etc. tracking their every move. Sad but its truth. For them the word personal has lost meaning because general public finds entertainment in knowing about their every single life detail.

But if I tell this to the press and the paparazzi they will instantly snap at me with the freedom of press crap. Well I think that they forget one very old saying - "Your freedom is only till where the tip of your nose ends". Freedom of press does not mean that you have the right to invade into the personal lives of people. Unless that is needed to uncover a crime of something of the same nature press has no business publicizing the private lives of people.

The information media has today lost one important component - information and has replaced it with entertainment. Every day I think that after going home I will watch some "News" but do I get to hear some constructive news? No. The race for TRPs has burnt all the bridges between information and news delivery. Now it’s just a delivery. News has been burnt to ashes. Press making out stories out of this air just to get momentary increase in the TRPs, some of those stories are so ridiculous that even the stupidest person will have a very very hard time believing it.

I just wonder how those paparazzi would feel if their own person life was scrutinized to shreds and presented in the media in a spectacle. I am pretty sure they would not like the entire world to know when they went out with their partner or kissed them, what they were wearing, who they talked with etc. etc. No they would not. But they cannot extend the same courtesy to the people. Recently in the natural debacle in Uttarakhand I saw a footage on almost all the news channels - a rock falling from the mountain in some landslide. The entire story was focused on how the rock was falling. It made me laugh derisively and I felt so bad for the state of media that I switched of the news channel.

I really hope that some press person reads this article and understand that personal means personal and not public and it should remain personal. If they do not understand that then they should probably take lessons in English. There are many people who like their every life detail to be aired, focus on them and please do some constructive news reporting. Journalism has hit a new low - a low that I call as abyss. I wonder if the journalism will ever come out of it.

I am closing this post by a famous quote by Mahatama Gandhi - "I believe in equality for everyone, except reporters and photographers".

Hi Everyone,

Today’s topic is a very negative word and I know I will start a lot of controversies with my arguments. The tile says all about the article but I will still ask the question. How do you think the world would be if there was no obsession of any kind at all? The immediate answer in most of our minds will be - very good and peaceful place. But I disagree - peaceful might be but good I don’t think so.

Once someone asked Einstein that how he was able to solve such difficult matters and problems. He replied that he kept on revisiting the problems at every moment in his head till the problem was solved. He said that if you are obsessed with solving something you will definitely solve it. In fact if we care to take a look into history, we will find that all great scientists, poets, artists, musicians, politicians, leaders, teachers, etc were obsessed with something or the other. It is their obsession that drove them for excellence and new discoveries.

We are all familiar with Edison. He was obsessed with finding the right material for the filament of the electric bulb. In the process he made over 200 discoveries and innovation. He was also obsessed with his goal. India's great sprinter Milkha Singh. P.T. Usha were obsessed with winning the Olympics. This led them to improve themselves and run that extra mile.

But every coin has two sides and there is a black side to obsession also. Problem comes when obsession becomes madness. There is a thin line dividing the two and when obsession is clouded with grief and bad intents it becomes madness. So obsession itself is not bad but the other peripherals surrounding it make it good or bad. The direction the obsession takes depends upon the route chosen.

I recently read the novel Inferno by Dan Brown and from there this article is inspired. In the novel scientist wants to save the earth by infecting everyone on earth with a virus which selectively makes the population sterile. No more reproduction, less population increase and earth can be saved. The obsession to save earth is good but the means taken to reach there are questionable. It was just an example to illustrate my point

So coming back to the question- how would the world today look like without obsession. I say it would be very backwards still, with no great inventions and innovations. Obsession is essentially good. Many questionable acts over time has made it negative and today this word is one of the most negative words in English dictionary.

Personally I think obsession is good. What do you think?

Thanks,

Hello Everyone,

After having seen the tragedy in Uttarakhand one can undoubtedly say that Mother Nature is the best serial killer out there in the entire universe. But it never kills without a just reason. It gives a lot of warnings, a lot of time for us to realize how much we are hurting the nature, only after all that it decides to go on a killing spree. Whether it is a tsunami, a tornado, a landslide, flash floods, earthquakes etc, these are just her ways to even the odds which have been stacked up against her over the centuries.

We all are getting artificial day by day. We love to remain in AC but we will not take efforts to stroll in open air. We would take out our bikes and cars even for a short distance but would not bother to walk few meters. We would love to construct buildings but would not bother replenishing trees which were lost due to construction. We love to further develop developed cities but forget about the naturally rich villages and the wonders they can do for nature. We take pride in driving in a car or SUV but feel ashamed taking a public conveyance.

All these factors are slowly but surely killing the nature. But you know what the sad part is, we are actually killing ourselves too. We get so used to AC that if we have to walk few hours in sunlight we get sunburns and blisters. I know of cases where parents have kept their newborns so much comforted in AC that they developed Ricketts (lack of vitamin D, whose primary source is sunlight). I have never particularly liked AC, it’s comfortable for sure but I don’t think it’s my cup of tea. I will tell about my first encounter with AC. As soon as I entered the AC room I felt so nauseous that I went out as soon as my work was done. That was many years ago and even now I don’t feel comfortable in AC, whether in office, room or car.

The various companies are trying so hard to develop natural atmosphere inside home using various appliance while avoiding the best and most natural AC - nature itself. Sadly we are not learning from our mistakes. The number of cars are increasing day by day. Some people having more cars than they can ever use. People take having car as a status symbol, as a symbol of development. A developed country is not one where everyone has car, a developed country is one where even the richest take public conveyance.

Its been almost 4 years now, since I came to Mumbai. In these four years I have seen drastic climatic changes, which are going to become even more drastic in coming future. The winters have been getting colder. For a place where people did not know what winters were, they sure are facing needs to get woolen clothes now. Glaciers are melting, areas near sea are submerging, Tornados and floods of increasing intensity are happening - disasters happening everywhere.

The nature is showing its unhappiness, it is ringing the warning bell; it’s high time that we wake up and start realizing that we have already set off the time bomb of disaster and try to delay it as much as possible. Sadly we cannot bring back the original state of the nature. We have come too far for that. We have crossed the point of no return and there is no way to undo the damage we have done. But we can start doing our share to prevent the Armageddon that is bound to happen sooner or later. Some of the simple suggestions are mentioned in the linked article.

I hope everyone realizes the seriousness of the situation because when Nature goes on a killing spree it discriminates between no one, everyone is given the same punishment - punishment of death.

Thanks,

Hello Everyone,

I am not sure how many of us have been to villages in India. But for those who have they must have seen the conditions of the schooling in those villages. In some places it is worse than others. But what is fact that cannot be missed is the joy on the faces of the kids who go to school (well for most of the kids :) ). This was very good until the MDM (Mid Day Meal) program was launched by the government. I am not saying it is not a good initiative but the very purpose for which it was launched never got fulfilled and instead people adopted it for another purpose.

One of my elder relative teaches in a government school and he oversees the execution of the program. I asked him few questions. Below is the short interview (translated of course):

Me: So do you think that MDM actually helps?

Him: It is more of a headache than a help. Now we can’t even focus on our actual job of teaching because we have to devote our time to the accounts management related to the MDM program. we have to keep track of expenses, prepare reports, send reports on a daily basis. Now another hurdle has been added of sending the reports on SMS too.

Me: So you mean that the program has not attracted new and more students.

Him: You have to understand that the purpose of the program was that with the prospect of one free meal more students would be attracted towards studies. True more students have been attracted but not towards studies, only towards the meal.....

Me: So you mean to say that students just come for meals?

Him: Yes that’s what is happening, the parents send their kids to the school at the meal time and they the kids go back in the fields to work again. So the purpose is being defeated here.

Me: But that used to happen before also. I mean that kids helped their parents in the fields and not coming to schools

Him: No prior to MDM parents used to send their kids with the sole purpose of learning and the kids learned with interest also. But now MDM has changed the mentality. Before the parents educated their kids with the hope that a little education will help their kids earn more, now it has become - send kids so that they can eat...

Before I could ask something else I got interrupted. But the message is clear here. Especially for schools where there are only 2-3 employees if they are busy entire day keeping accounts how they will be do their basic duty - imparting education. Later on I talked to him again and in summary he said, "Before MDM also parents were able to feed their kids. Many people think that MDM was implemented because kids did not have enough to eat. It is not so. It was implemented to lure the kids to school and it has failed its purpose. It is only luring kids to eat"

According to a survey done in 2010 some of the cons of the program came forward:

The meals provided at many places are not fit for consumption

Teachers waste 3 hours everyday cooking and preparing meals

Students waste 10 hours a week washing and cleaning dishes

75% of the schools running MDM program has no availability of drinking water facility

Many schools do not receive adequate rations and teachers have to spend money to feed the kids

Shortage of infrastructure and manpower

The one good thing that all the respondents agreed upon was that it was a social leveler and was eroding the boundaries created by caste and religions.

So once again I wonder why a thorough analysis of any policy is not done before it is implemented. Why a pilot project is not run before actual implementation. I know only the policy makers can answer this question. But one thing is sure that the program which was supposed to be a boon in the field of education has become a curse - The "MDM" curse. Government needs to provide better infrastructure and better way of implementing such a good program.

I was just talking to my sister yesterday on ups and downs in life. One thing that we both agreed upon is life is worth living only because of ups and downs. Without the hardships the life would become boring and not worth living. And I think it’s right too. This post is prompted by the recent suicide case of Jiah Khan and motivated by the person whom most of we know - Nick Vujicic

Nick Vujicic was born without any arms or legs. There was no medical reason for it but it was also a condition that would break most of the persons. But this person learned to live with it, not only learn to live with it, he also overcame it. Today he is a very famous motivational speaker. He motivates people with all their limbs intact. From his own website, "I won’t pretend my life is easy, but through the love of my parents, loved ones, and faith in God, I have overcome my adversity and my life is now filled with joy and purpose". This is the attitude towards life. Being born without any limbs was a chapter in his life. But he decided to move out of that chapter and move ahead rather than being stuck in that chapter of his life.

Another very inspirational personality to overcome hardships is Bethany Hamilton, a pro surfer with only one arm. In the sport of surfing where balance is everything a surfer with one arm is at a severe disadvantage. But she overcame that disadvantage and showed that there is no limit to the life. There is a movie on her called "The Soul Surfer". It’s one of my all time favorite and really motivational movie. I would recommend everyone to watch it.

Unlike him there are many people who just can’t bring themselves out of a sad chapter in life. The recent Bollywood suicide case is one example. I won’t pretend to preach or understand the reasons behind the suicide case and talk about whether it was right or not. But I would definitely say that nothing is worth ending one's life. Many great people have become great only after being toiled in the adversities of life. If they would have ended their lives we would not have such great people. And more importantly if life is not worth living then why the hell the entire medical community daily works towards saving life.

Ending one's life is not the solution to anything. Sadly the thought that there is nothing more to live for has crossed many of us. Out of those many a good percentage actually thinks of committing suicide and out of that good percentage a small number of people actually go ahead and commit suicide. But did they get rid of their problems. Oh yes but in the background they created problems for many others. Not to mention the emotional trauma their death causes to their loved ones.

There is always something to live for. I am a big fan of Nick Vujicic. I have watched many of his videos and when I am low I think that if that person can carry on without any limbs I don't even get the right to say that my problems are huge and great. There is a way of dealing with problems. It’s the attitude that matters. Living is more fun than dying any day.

So let’s not get stuck in the sad chapters of life and move ahead to find the happy chapters and live them fully.

Thanks,

Hi Everyone,

Think for a second that you are on a road and someone from behind comes and kicks you and beats you. Grim scenario, right? The moment someone will do something like this we will start voicing our protests and may be in return get violent too. But we will voice our protests. But ever thought about how a being which is not able to voice its hurt and opinions, will feel. Yes friends I am talking about the treatment which we dish out to the animals. And when i say animals i am not only talking about the stray animals, i am talking about the pets too.

Let’s be blunt here most of us are not considerate towards animals or give a damn about their feelings. I have seen people taking out their anger on their pets and sometimes on stray animals too. But is it their fault? What wrong that animal has done to deserve that treatment? Nothing?

Many people like to keep pets. And I have come across people who keep their pets with great love and care and also those people who bring the pets but forget to take care of them. People forget that when they bring a pet in the family they have to treat them like a part of the family and family member. Pets require great deal of care and affection because they are not in their natural habitat and hence extra care is needed. I personally don’t like to have pets because I know I don’t have the patience to take care of them. So why bring them in home? This is what many pet owners fail to understand and when the condition of the pet deteriorates they leave them in unknown places too. Many such cases have happened. When this happens then its up to the local municipal organizations to collect them and take them to holding cells which I have seen are not great in any sense. They keep animals in cramped spaces.

One of my team mates has dogs, one of which is genetically retarded but the care given to both the dogs are same and it can be reflected in the behavior of the dogs. The dogs also adore the family equally. This is how one should take care of their pets. Their requirements should not enjoy the lowest priority; rather they should enjoy the same priority as other family members.

When I was around 10 years old, i read a historical story about Rome, where they were saved by the ducks. The story goes like, the soldiers used to feed ducks every day, even if they did not have anything to eat. One day in the cover of night the enemy army decided to attack the fort, but the animals and birds have keen sense of danger, so the ducks started making noises and this got attention of one of the soldier. As soon as they knew that there is enemy hidden in the darkness of the night they got ready and the tables were turned. So the moral of the story is that if you take care of the pets, they take care of you.

Also many people crossbreed animals, something which is allowed in our country but banned in foreign countries (allowed only to registered people). This might create breeds of genetically hampered offspring. But they don’t worry about it and keep on cross breeding. it is actually atrocity on the animals.

So the gist of this blog is that we should treat animals with kindness and care, specially the pets because they are very loyal to the ones which are kind to them. Let’s not bury our kindness towards them. There was so much more i wanted to write on this matter but the blog is getting long, so

Thanks

Hi Everyone,

When I was very small, may be in standard 3rd or 4th (don't remember exactly), my father took us to a circus show that was being held in the city. There was one show that captured my attention most and that was the juggler show. Now that I am old enough to think about things from various angles I can relate what a juggler does to many other things in life.

If one views a juggler in action closely then we will see that he starts with two balls, then three, then four and sometimes I have seen jugglers playing with up to 12 balls together and not one of them falls. Once they are done with balls they use bowling pins to do the same. Then they raise the stake by using knives to juggle, then the stakes are raised even further and they use lit torches to juggle. But not once they get hurt or fail.

They know that with each increase in object and with each change of object the risk of failing and getting hurt increases. But he still goes on and the more risky stakes are in juggling the more famous and popular a juggler becomes. Now why I am telling this story? Because I find a stark similarity between the profession of a juggler and our normal careers.

When was the last time we took a big risk in a career and took that 'leap of faith'? For most of us it would have been a very long time. Normally when we start our careers we are very enthusiastic at the beginning but then later on the enthusiasm decreases and we get into comfort zone and don't bother taking risks in careers. By taking risks I do not mean uncalculated risks or rash decisions. But yes I am definitely talking about having the guts to leave the comfort zone and get moving ahead to actually achieve what we have wanted and not just trying to compromise our dreams by what we have.

I have heard people a lot saying that they would like to be as rich as a celebrity or as famous as some person. But do they even think for a moment the arduous life journey these successful people have gone through to reach where they are. There is a school in Lucknow called CMS which has a Guinness Book of world record for having maximum number of students in a single city. But do you know how hard was the life of the owner of the school was? Mr. Jagdish Gandhi, the school owner, used to study under street lamps because he did not have enough means to live a comfortable life. If he would have accepted that as his faith and not done that extra we would not be having such a good school at present.

People whine a lot but they are not ready to do the efforts, walk that extra mile, leave the comfort zone, take some risks and take a 'blind leap of faith'. If we are not ready to do these things then I don’t think we have a right to complain. Some people really do have genuine issues and problems but for most of us we don’t and we simply don’t want to make that effort.

We don’t have an unlimited life and our years are limited. If we take a look at all the successful persons we will feel that most of them had to struggle a lot to reach where they are, so let’s make that effort to fulfill our dreams and desires. We should remember that, "If we do not go after what we love to do we will be forced to love what we do"

Let’s be like the juggler and raise the stakes from time to time because calculated risks can be very rewarding with some setbacks on the way too.. But in the end the result more fruitful than not.

Hi Everyone,

People all over the world are very good at stamping. This one thing we as human beings have perfected over time beautifully and have diligently followed it too. We stamp people with stereotypes, with religions, castes, nationality and any other label or brand you can think of. Have you ever visited a shop that makes stamps illegally? They keep stamps in groups depending upon their purpose. Like stamps for government offices, stamps for private offices and several other such groups divided in various boxes. That's what we have done over ages, divided ourselves into various boxes and slowly and slowly the walls of the boxes have grown so high that either we no longer wish to see outside the box or we are unable to if we want.

As you might have guessed today’s topic is about the walls created by caste. When a child is born it just that a child, it has no religion, caste, nationality etc. How can it have, it has just arrived into this branded and stamped world. Even before the child understands anything it starts hearing words like religion, castes etc. Parents specifically say that people of those castes are not good, you should not mingle with them, and these people are below our class, you cannot marry that girl or guy as they are not from our caste and the list goes on

My focus here is specifically intercaste marriages. People say that marriages are made in heaven, they why parents and society get all worked up when the marriage does not suit their criteria of class, caste etc. The moment parents come to know that their son and daughter have chosen an intercaste partner, all sorts of emotional drama starts. All of a sudden the desire to please society becomes more important that the happiness of the son/ daughter. Sometimes the couple succeeds in changing the mindset of the parents but in most of the cases they aren't able to, which leaves them with only two choices - forget their love or elope. Both the choices are difficult as in both the cases they end up losing someone close to them either parents or their love.

One thing that boggles my mind is that why only in marriages the caste becomes so important. It has been proves scientifically that genetics of the future generation become weaker if the marriage happens within the same caste or community. TO keep the genetics strong it is important that marriages happen between people of different castes, or places. It keeps the future genes strong and healthy. But the narrow mind of the society can't understand or accept this fact. How can it when it practices honor killing if a couple has married against the wishes of the parents and society

These practices sicken me deeply. One of the biggest reasons for these is the attachment of ego with the marriage event. So much ego is involved in the entire process that sometimes I feel marriage is being done for the guy and the girl or for the society. Because of the ego I feel that caste becomes an impenetrable barrier when it comes to marriage.

This society and we as individuals need to understand that Intercaste relationships are necessary for better future generations. Who are we do differentiate and discriminate on the basis of caste when the same blood flows in all of us. And more importantly who are we to separate to people in love, especially when the only issue is caste and rest everything is ok.

I know for anyone reading it will easy to agree, but actual test comes when it happens to our own kids or in our own family. If we can agree to "I" relationship at that time we have done our service in improving one of many sins of the society.

Hi Everyone,

When I started this A-Z series I was a bit worried that may be for a particular letter I would not find a suitable topic to write but what has surprised me that we are so surrounded with everyday problems that I actually do not need to look far or search for issues. Today’s issue that I will be discussing is something that I encountered on my way to meet my sister.

I was in an auto and stuck in the traffic jam (not new for Mumbai city :)). All of a sudden an ambulance horn starts blaring up and as is required as courtesy, vehicles standing in front of it started giving way to the ambulance. But there were three vehicles, two cars and one auto, which refused to give way to the ambulance even though the ambulance was honking the horns continuously. I wondered whether the drivers of the those vehicles were blind, that they cannot see the ambulance in their rear mirrors or they were deaf that they could not hear the ambulance siren or they were just plain selfish. Whatever the case was this was supreme height of selfishness.

In our country we do not follow traffic rules unless there is a traffic police person with a stick and fine book in his hand. Why? Are we so short on time that few minutes lost in giving way to the ambulance will cause disaster for us? What about the person who is in the ambulance and might be struggling between life and death. Whose need is more important? The answer is quite obvious but obvious seems to be the most elusive answers to us.

I was having the same discussion with my HR yesterday for few minutes. What she said is sadly and actually true for most of the Indian citizens, "We in India in general lack common courtesy". How true and sad fact. I remember there used to be a program called "Suribhi" which came on DoorDarshan channel. In that program they once showed about some place (don’t remember the place), where if a person is standing by the side of the road to cross it and there is a vehicle coming, the vehicle driver will politely stop the car, let the person cross the road and then he will move away again. Now in Mumbai or in India in general due to the huge population, this is not possible but at least give way to the ambulance which is carrying a person struggling between life and death. This is common courtesy.

I hope I am able to make my point here. Please a request to everybody from next time if you hear an ambulance siren, give way to it or you might be responsible for grave injury to someone or even death. Be a part of such a simple SOLUTION and do not remain the PROBLEM like we generally behave.

Hi Everyone,

In one of my previous posts The "E" Factor - 'Excellence' I stressed on the fact that the education system must be more practical rather that memorizing a bunch of course text books, and some other facts too. But one thing everyone should remember that there is no shortcut to success. If one wants to succeed he/ she will have to thoroughly understand the area of work whether it be in office, college or school. No one can escape hard work as it is foundation to the ladder of success.

Having said that I bring attention to the RTE (Right to Compulsory and Free Education Act, 2006). This act was primarily created and put into action to ensure that all the students, privileged or unprivileged can get an education up to class 8th without the fear of being denied the basic right of education. But there are few clauses in the act that caught my attention and which I (and many others) personally feel undermine the good things that the act was supposed to bring out. The one clause that troubled me most is:

"No student shall be held back or expelled under any circumstances from class 2nd to 8th"

It is practically giving the student the free license to do whatever he wants and he will be passed to the next class. I was scouring the web for information about cases on misuse of RTE and found one case that happened in Chennai where the parent sued a CBSE board affiliated school for dropping his kid in the 7th standard because of poor performance. The father might have won the case but he failed his kid.

The clause should have been taken in the sense that even if the student is not very good in the results teachers will work with students to increase their IQ levels and potentials rather than expelling them from the schools. Rather than this, the students and more surprisingly their parents take it as a free chit for not having to worry about their kid’s performance till class 8th. I say why only stop at class 8th, let the law cover till 12th and then let the students jump into the world of competition unprepared. That’s what happening when the students enter the class 9th. A huge percentage of students are so weak in their basics that it’s useless for them to be in that standard and it brings a lot of demotivation. The pressure causes many students to commit suicide or do irrational things in an attempt to live up to the expectations of the parents and society.

This is so utterly ridiculous and insane. How can one suddenly expect to perform at an excellent level in 9th standard when he/ she has been doing time pass till 8th standard. Surprisingly the kids today are so smart that they know no matter what they do they will breeze through till class 8th. The government officials told that this law will prevent any sort of demotivation. Might be true but they failed to take into account the huge pressure and suicidal tendencies that this law is generating after class 8th.

Like I said in starting, there is no shortcut to success. you have to work hard to get good results. If one can work hard as well as smart then even better. But hard work is a necessity. I still remember my school days when my father used to take my test at home before exams. I remember that it always used to be the entire course at one go and not one or two questions or chapters. It’s result of that hard work that I am where I am today and the skill sets I have with me.

What this act has effectively conveyed is that till 8th you don’t need to do any hard work, no one in the world can stop you from going into the next grade. Then all of a sudden the pressure becomes so high in 9th standard that only students who have a natural tendency towards studies are able to cope up with the pressure.

It’s a sad state when a Government makes a blanket law like this. Government has created a senseless grading system that is affecting the coming generations in ways government is not able to comprehend. To be continued in the next article when I will reach the letter "M"
Hi Everyone,

Just take a look back down the memory lane and try
to find out how many projects you started but either did not finish or did not
even start. You would be surprised to find a plethora of ideas that never
reached the finish line for one reason or another. Ever thought how would your
life look like if you had finished all those projects and ideas. I don't really
need to spell that. Someone has rightly said, "Best ideas are found in the
dustbin". Some of the best ideas of our life were the ones, which we did
not start upon or never finished.

This article is about those ideas we never started
or finished, ideas which could have changed our lives. I was looking at my
website and felt bad that I have not paid any attention to it for so many
months even though I have paid for it. It's completely my fault that I am not
working towards it even though I know that it will generate rewards for me. The
irony is when we do not take our ideas to the finish line we try console
ourselves and justify by telling others and ourselves too that there were
several unavoidable reasons because of which the idea could not work out. Sadly
in our hearts we clearly know that in 99.99 % cases we ourselves are the only
ones to blame.

I have many examples from my life where if I had
followed those ideas to completion the growth in my career and personality
would have been tremendous. But like I mentioned above I kept consoling myself
that they were not the best course of action. But in hindsight I feel they were
much better course of action than the ones followed. I think what is said about
hindsight is true - it’s always perfect. But I am digressing here. What I am
trying to say here that we all want a lot in our lives and we keep dreaming
(and there is nothing wrong with dreaming) but then we don't put enough efforts
to bring our dreams and ideas to fruition. Most of the times we lazy around
until its too late to anything constructive about our ides. There are also
cases where genuine problems arise and ideas need to be shelved either for a
future date or forever.

I have been writing this article for 6 days now and I was laughing at the irony that the name of the article is finish line and I
am not take the article itself to the finish line. So I have decided to
complete it today. Having highlighted some of the reasons behind incompletion
of the ideas let me also share examples from my life where I also shelved the
ideas but then I later did complete them or started working them on again. The
purpose of this is to highlight the triggers or events, which can help any
individual to mold the ideas and situations so that they can carry their ideas
to "F" line.

This is not my first blog. I
started one when 6 years back but then I stopped after first article and never
pursued it. I kept telling myself I don't have time for it. Recently something
happened which forced me to bring out social problems out in the open in an
educated community and what we as individuals can do to resolve those problems
- an example of external trigger

I used to learn guitar but then
when I came to Mumbai I just left it. Now once again I have started learning
after I realized that it is something that brings peace to my mind and even if
I don't learn it I should keep playing and improving on what I already know -
example of personal trigger

Like I mentioned above my website
has been sitting idle. I have started working on it again after I started
writing this article because I realized that I am wasting the money I have
already invested in it - example of monetary trigger

What I mean to say through these examples is that
we lack the motivation and triggers in our life to complete our ideas. But no
one from the outside is going to come and tell you that you should do this and
that. We ourselves have get off our lazy bums and start working towards them to
completion.

Ideas are like any animal species. Initially there are
many, then people start hunting them, then they become endangered species and
they finally they become extinct. Same case with ideas. Initially we all have a
lot of ideas, when we don't implement them others who have the same ideas
implement them, then the frequency of ideas become less and finally they become
extinct and we get no more good ideas in our mind.

The more we implement the ideas the more we get. So
it’s high time that we all as individuals start working on our shelved ideas
and plans before they become extinct in our mind. Start realizing the triggers
that motivate us and catch them before they flee away. And finally start making
a better life for ourselves instead of just toiling on something, which we
don't like to do just because we didn't pursue our ideas.

Hi Everyone,

I still remember the third semester of by
graduation very clearly because it was that semester that jolted me out of the
dream world of marks. You see when I was in first semester I topped my branch,
then in second semester also I got better marks than first semester but then in
third semester my mars dropped drastically by 20%. From 80s I reached into 60s.
A big shocker for me really. Why I am telling this? Because I have seen in our
society guardians, teachers and parents put a lot of pressure for marks on the
students.

I was never a very bright student until I went into
graduation. For me getting marks was very hard. When I was in KG I was ok ok at
studies. Somehow I still remember almost all the results. Then when I entered
second grade, for the first time I got a position in the top three. I was
shocked to be true. But then I felt that getting marks makes others happy so
this might be the right thing to do. So I worked hard to get marks. It’s true
that when you get good marks you do absorb knowledge also but it’s not
necessarily true that you develop a good understanding also. This is where the
"E" factor comes in.

I believe that getting marks is not as important as
getting excellence in a subject. Motivating a child to get marks is as
important as to motivate him/ her to develop an understanding of the subject. I
do not need to quote example of others when I myself got good marks in maths
but never really understood the concepts behind them properly. Oh I understood
enough to get the questions true but beyond that no idea. I have taught for few
years and I have seen that students have a habit of learning things up rather
than questioning the things, a habit extremely important.

Getting marks is easy. Some people may laugh at
this statement but trust me I am saying from experience.. getting marks is very
easy, what’s difficult is knowing why you got those marks, did you really got
the topic down, can you apply the logic of the same problem to a different
situation etc. The education system in this country is partly to blame. I have
observed that we learn a lot of things in school and college, which have no
real application later on in life. Comparing to the system in western countries,
there also till certain grade the students are required to learn the basic things
but that’s it, after that each student is motivated to pursue his/ her own area
of interest and the subject related to it.

What difference does it make when compared to Indian
education system. A huge difference. A bucket load of subjects of all varieties
is much less efficient that a selected set of subjects suited to the interests
of the student. Also in this country most of the companies equate marks with
excellence when interviewing for jobs, which is wrong on so many levels. I
might not have good marks in my exams but that does not mean I don't
understand my subjects. It might be simply that I felt too lazy to write in exams,
which I really do, most of the times.

So coming back to the opening paragraph, after that
shocking result I stopped going after marks and devoted my time in library
going after things I liked to read and understand and the growth in my
excellence was tremendous. Slowly but surely I developed that "E"
factor in me. Some may feel that they are past the age of studying and
developing excellence but its never late. One movie recently very eloquently
put the message that I am also trying to bring out

"Don't run after success.. Run after
excellence.. Then success will have no choice but to come after you."

Everyone is unique and has one factor that
separates him/ her from the crowd. One should find out that quality and develop
it. That will bring the more success than anything else. I have found out mine
and continuously developing excellence in it with rewarding results, both
monetarily and personally.

So lets build this "E" factor in us and
make our life more prosperous and happy than it can be otherwise.

Hi Everyone,

I just hate people, completely abhor them, detest them, who just for the sake of little limelight spout sexist remarks, unsolicited advices which no one is interested in and make comments whose stupidity level, more often than not, is beyond the reaches of my imagination. You must be wondering why all of a sudden I have gone off my rocker. Just a couple of days back I read a comment made on why girls should not wear skirts or shorts, by some organization's big boss in Noida. Come on people why cant you just mind your own damn business. Don't poke your nose in matters where it does not belong.

Now that I have ranted a little and I feel better I will come to the core of the topic which is about people who just for the sake of little limelight would say anything and comment anything. When the Delhi rape case happened (which one though, so many happened recently... sad state right...) all the political leaders and religious leaders had something to say on the matter. Some of the comments were so hilarious and outrageous that I could not believe my ears and eyes when heard or saw them. I consider myself a bit of a maverick but even I will not think of such statements.

Well they are politicians and religious leaders, their day does not end unless they make some stupid comment. But the main question is why they get inclined towards making such comments? Media attention obviously. Trying to get back in news. You know they are just like a product in the market. When a new product is launched in the market lot of advertisements are given to establish the credentials of the product. After sometime people start forgetting the product and it starts losing foothold in the market and at that time they again show some more advertisements. These people are like these products and what stupid comments they make are like those advertisements to keep them in the eye of the people, in the limelight.

As soon as something happens everyone gets a chance to advertise themselves, to once again get back into the limelight. Why? Because if they will not be in the media limelight, from where will they get all the money they have at present. Media is to blame big time for the stupidity of these individuals. Whenever someone makes some comment it will be aired on the television for the entire day. Whole debates will happen, people will come who will analyse each and every word said by that individual and try to find hidden meanings in what he said (even if the comment was plain crap). Don't they have anything else to report with so many things happening in the country. So you see indirectly media is increasing their urges to come in the limelight because they know the moment they spout something people will listen to all these media channels all day as they will definitely air it.

Leaving aside the politicians and religious gurus and coming to common people, there is no shortage of such people here also. Just yesterday I read that some one has a filed a case against M.S. Dhoni (Indian Cricket Captain) for hurting the sentiments of Hindus through some advertisement. No one will argue on the point that we see almost on a weekly basis someone doing something that hurts the sentiments of one religion or another. But do we see a line of cases for these in the court. Obviously not because it will not generate any publicity; but if you file case against a big name like Dhoni media will be your host for next many days and you will become an instant celebrity. Such petty mindedness. Whether Dhoni was right or wrong is not the case here; case is why against him, or many such cases that have happened before also with popular names.

These individuals suffer from something which I have started calling "Limelight Deficiency Syndrome (LDS)". The symptoms of this syndrome are periodic urges to say something extremely stupid which will probably hurt the sentiments of masses and thus give better limelight attention to them. We are the ones who feed this disease to grow by being the audience they want. Actually I have stopped listening to all the stupids debates that happen on the News Channels. Media industry works on TRP and if we, the audience, do not give them the TRP they want they will themselves stop airing such stupid crap on the television for the entire day.

Hope everyone gets the embedded message in the article. Be the change, be the part of the solution.

Tahnks,
Hi Everyone,

I would like to dedicate this article Mr. Amit Madan (head of production team of current IPL). So here is the 3rd article in the series of 26 articles

Last time I wrote the article on caste it was taken down - reason given that it was too sensitive for people's mentalities. Hope I can be less blunt this time and still make my point.

In this article I am not going into any lengthy discussion but I will simply put out some general observations. No one with enough sense can argue against the fact that caste has become a menace in the society. For the purposes of debate and discussions everyone if fighting to come forward with points against caste but when it comes to oneself no one is willing to go against the society. Some observations which I have accumulated over years are so contradictory that I just wonder what role exactly does caste play in the society?

Still in many places in this country two people of different caste refuse to eat in the same plate. Many might wonder but in villages it’s still the trend. But if the same person of upper caste is ill he will not hesitate to take a pill or medicine from a doctor of lower caste. So my question is if you cannot eat food from the hands of that person how come you can take the medicine.. Of course they will take it’s the matter of life and death there and nothing is more important than life.

Another example - People from upper castes keep cribbing and complaining about the reservation policies in the name of caste and religion but what they fail to realize that their oppression of lower castes is what has created an opportunity for people with cunning to use it in form of politics and votes. The politicians are not to blame; we ourselves are the root cause of this problem.

These are two very general observations, sadly there so many more. I have been personally through a lot of trauma because of caste issues. And now I realize that caste is nothing but an excuse to do what you want to do and what you don’t want to do. Period. There used to be a rationale behind caste system but that rationale has been twisted over time and has become a cancerous cell now that eating the society from inside out.

We keep complaining that this country is not progressing, the politicians are after vote banks and what not but in reality we are the one who has created these niches and opportunities. So can this cancer be stopped? Obliviously. We are the medicine. We are the cure. We just fail to realize in fear of the society and reputation. This generation has a huge responsibility of erasing these boundaries created by caste, and kill this cancer once and for all.

I am leaving this topic open for debate. All views are welcome and appreciated.

Hi Everyone,

I would like to dedicate this article to Professor Shanbagh (MBA communications professor during MBA) and Mr. Amit Madan (head of production team of current IPL). So here is the 2nd article in the series of 26 articles.

I am giving you a scenario. Think of a problem that you have been working around for months and still not able to get solution to it. Then all of a sudden one day you wake up from sleep and feel that in your dreams you have found a solution. Has this ever happened to you? Happens to me all the time. Why?

Our brain is a wonderful thing. It knows the answers even before we completely understand the problem. There are two parts to the brain one is the conscious and the other is subconscious - to put it in a crude way. Now we all focus on our sub conscious so much that we forget that there is another much bigger part of the brain that is million times faster than our conscious brain and has solutions ready at hand. The problem is very few people can trust their subconscious and tap into it.

We have a habit of over analyzing things to the point that we miss the simplest and easiest of solutions. When I was in MBA we had a task of book presentation. In that every group was supposed to read a book and present on it. Our group was given a book titled, "Blink". When we understood the theme of the book we decided to we will not over analyze the presentation. We used to do a brainstorming session where everyone put forth two ideas that appealed to him from the book. And we compiled a presentation on those ideas. The flow came automatically. This was the first time I actually realized the power of subconscious. And to win the best presentation in that activity was just icing on the cake.

So what is this blink all about? Its trusting your gut instinct and not letting is paralyzed with over analysis. Most of the times the first idea that came into our mind was the best one but then we start analyzing it consciously and we end making a poorer choice. Blink is about letting your subconscious guide you. The only think you need to do is to accept what your subconscious is telling you.

Some examples where we over analyze. We write mails to clients every day. Most of the time we write a mail, then we read it, and then we make some changes. Then we re-read it again make some changes. This process happens a few times and in the end the result is most of the times not better than the original mail. The first thoughts that come to mind are most of the times the best ones. We need to learn to recognize the best ones from the bad ones. This process takes some time but in the end the results are wonderful and very fruitful.

It took me many months to trust my subconscious and let it guide me. But now I trust it completely. I love making decisions in the blink of an eye. I have good and bad experiences alike. But don’t confuse your desires with your subconscious because then it will be a bad decision. The perfection comes slowly but it shows in the agility of your decision making.

So what an individual will gain from it. First the processing speed of mind increases. Think of it as an upgrade from dual core to octa core processor. Secondly a lot of time is saved on over analysis.

Remember analysis is good but over analysis is bad. Trust your instincts and live more happily. Unlock your subconscious mind and the power hidden in it. I will close this article with the same quote that I did my presentation with

"Dont think just 'blink' "

Hi Everyone,

This article is first in a series of 26 articles that will follow. The theme of these articles is simply whatever word or phrase comes to my mind when I think of a letter; will be the topic of that day.

I would like to dedicate this entire series to Mr. Amit Madan (head of production that is organizing current IPL) who gave me this wonderful idea. I had the opportunity of meeting him on one of my travels and we hit off wonderfully. A very knowledgable and down to earth person who gave a whole new perspective on seeing things. So here is the first article in a long series.

Just few hours back I saw two people on one side of the road signalling to an auto person on other side of the road whether he will go or not. The auto driver declined and the two people started swearing at the auto person. I was walking by the auto at that time and even though I cannot hear what they were saying I could easily make out the words from their lip movements. Why were they swearing?

Going back few days, I was in the lift of my office and I rested my shoe against the lift wall. The operator suddenly asked me to remove my foot and that too in a bit rude tone. I did as he told me to but I was a little angry at the tone he used with me. But he continued saying that everyone dirties the elevator walls without even considering that the housekeeping has to clean it everyday at as early as 5-6 in the morning. Then all of a sudden all my anger left me because I realised that it was actually my fault and in my momentary arrogance I got angry without even thinking one bit about my fault. Why? Because he interrupted my comfort?

Going back a few months, I went to mall and there were many autos lined up. A person came up to an auto and asked if he will go to certain destination. He declined and the person started manhandling that auto driver. Why? Did that person own the auto driver? Doesn't an auto driver has the right to decline?

Going back many years, I was travelling by train and my stop was coming. With me was one of my friend. We were standing at the door and there was also a tea vendor at the door. He was trying to gather all his things. He asked us to hold one of his boxes for a while. Actually we both looked at each other thinking who would hold. Finally I held the box. The vendor realised that we were hesitant and once he has settled his things he said to us one thing - there is no shame in doing a small work - and alighted at the station. Why did we feel hesitant? Did we think that holding that box was beneath our pride?

There are several other instances from my own life that I can recount. And in fact in every person's life there will be instances where that person has looked down upon someone with arrogance because in his opinion that fellow was beneath him. Why this arrogance? Recently I have been thinking a lot on this. And Finally I have come to the conclusion that if we have something that others don't we feel superior and its this superiority that breeds that arrogance. The arrogance in turn freezes sensible portion of the brain and our dislike for people beneath us overtakes us.

But I have also realised that by being arrogant we are only alienating the people around us. In fact if we show a little smile to any person who we are dealing with you will never know when that person will might come to our aid in future. My sister has this wonderful quality of talking to everyone with a smiling face. She makes it a habit to greet everyone even if its a street vendor, cashier in a shop, sales assistants etc and properly thank them once the work is done. A habit which I have picked upon and made my habit too. And you won't need to wait for months to see the effect of this habit because the effects are instantaneous. The whole demeanour of the other person will change and his behaviour towards us will become friendly and warm.

A smile, a friendly greeting and a proper thank you does not cost more than a minute and the difference it make in a person's day is huge. I was shopping at Pantaloons with my sister and it was a very busy day because of some discount offer. There was a long queue at the checkout counter. The person in front of us was talking to the cashier rudely. When our turn came we saw that the cashier was a girl and she was so flustered with customers' behaviour that she was not able to focus on the work. So we asked her what her name was, joked with her and then invited her to have an ice cream with us in the food court. Her mouth was open and she thought we were joking. When we said we were not joking and she needed a break she was genuinely surprised. Even though she could not come with us That day but after few visits she did accept our invitation. Now both me and my sister knows that if we ever had any problems she will help us out.

This is how much we can get by spending a minute of our time and showing a warm and caring behaviour towards other people. Everyone just wants a little respect. They don't expect that you invite them to your home and hug them, they simply expect a smile and respect.

Next time before you yell at someone in arrogance just because you thought they were beneath you, pause for a moment and think how you would feel if you were the one being shouted at and whether your shouting is justified or not. Smile and embrace people rather than repelling them with arrogance.

Thanks,

Hello Everyone,

I have been writing on some serious topics so thought will take a break and write on a little less serious topic. This idea came to my mind yesterday when I was making a word doc. My mind was actually occupied somewhere else and hence I was making a lot of typing mistakes but bless Bill Gates for providing such a great in-built correction tool which many times doesn't even let the writer know that mistakes were made. So I am happy that i can ignore my typing mistakes but is my 'brain' happy????

Well I will have to ask my brain (Still not sure how I will do it??) for that and if my brain is as lazy as I am then it will probably give me a thumbs up and a big smile. But jokes aside and on a serious note I am sure its not the brains which are lazy it's us who make our brains lazy. And how we are making our brains lazy? Simple we are surrounded by so many tools which we can use instead of using our brains. Things like calculators, google, office softwares etc are deteriorating our memory and making us weak.

Just to prove my point I will ask a simple question. How many phone numbers from your mobile you can recite. Many people won't be able to recite more than 3-4 numbers. There are some people who actually make an effort to remember many numbers. Then there are also some people who don't even remember their own number. Surprised but its a reality. I have come across such people. I have suffered from the goodness of digital technology myself and so I will put down my experience. When I was in class 10th I had commerce as subject. We used to have questions on accounting which required a lot of number additions. When I was at home I used the calculators to speed up my work. But the same usage brought my speed down in the exams and my grades suffered because of it.

I learnt a lesson from this and made it a point to use my brains always. I then learned vedic mathematics to engage my brain into rigorous activities. Other means were puzzles and reading books etc. But how many of us actually realize that these technologies are deteriorating our interpersonal abilities and our gray matter. Everyone must have heard of the Alzheimers disease. Its when a person starts losing his/ her memory slowly with time. I think we are slowly suffering the digital equivalent of it because of our over reliance on digital technologies.

And please don't take me wrong, I an not against the digital technologies. I use a lot of them myself but where do we draw the line. Parents are handing digital gadgets in the hands of the kids - nothing wrong with that but it becomes an issue when they fail to keep a check. When I was in MBA I doubt anyone did their final project without using google. Whatever they got on google they could also easily get in a library. Agreed but also remember that our previous generations did not have a google to support them and they in many cases did far better than us.

We are entering a Digital Alzheimer's age where technology is making us losing our memory. People argue that saving time is important but I say saving your brain is also important.

Thanks,
Its a nice sensitive message and fairly easy to understand. Also there is no ambiguity in the message. How in the world can some post a a comment like this to this beautiful and sensitive message:

My friend Jasveena was ready to murder this person and she requested me to put opinion from a male's perspective. To be very frank I was also very disgusted. But before I elaborate into that let me develop some background to the article, now that the issue is in open.

When we grow up we come in contact with people during various stages of life. The first contact starts at home. Then comes the school, then comes the college, then comes the work place and so it goes on. During these contacts we learn something new in every stage. One of these things is sexual and adult jokes and innuendos. Sexual talks and innuendos are something that have been present in the society from a long time so I will not say that joking sexually is wrong or right. My concern here is how do we decide where we are supposed to say what and when do we know we have to stop. Big Questions really which I will touch upon just a moment in later paragraphs.

Jokes on male and female sexuality are fairly common. In fact they are a huge source of entertainment among college teenagers - girls and boys alike. But there is a limit to everything. There is a line which should not be crossed. There is a time and place for everything. If a married couple start talking about their sexual activities right in the middle of a crowded restaurant, most of the people will feel awkward and uncomfortable. This person XYZ Malhotra also forgot that what should be said at what place. It is because of these jackasses and male chauvinists that society ignores any mistake done by a man and punishes any small mistake done by a female heavily. Why? If a guy shoots a sexual innuendo in public he is the dude but if a girl does the same people say n number of things about the girl, her character and what not.

Oh and if you have time, do visit the Blog of this "nice" fellow XYZ Malhotra once. I will not disgrace my blog by giving link to his blog. You can easily find it on Google Plus. See every person has his ways of pleasure. Some people love writing, some playing, some reading, some sexual talks, some helping etc. But no body is interested in knowing about sexual sadisms in public forums XYZ. There are forums meant for that, use them because I don't have the authority to stop you, not that you would listen anyway. If, and mind it "IF", you visit his blog you will find jokes targeted solely at females and in a really really sadistic, horrendous, vulgar and obscene way. I felt embarrassed after reading the first few and then I closed the page. I just wanted to confirm whether this was a single isolated incident or it was something of a habit. Seems like a sick habit.

Now the problems that arise out of this case? There are so many. The first and foremost you are disrespecting the opposite gender. Second you are polluting the public space by such "legally" idiotic comments (for those who are thinking why I used the term legally idiotic - in legal terms an idiot person is one who has no sanity in him/ herself. He or she is insane at all given times). Thirdly you are encouraging others to follow your path which I am pretty sure is not something worth following. When kids go to college they are introduced to a whole new world of sexual innuendos and talks but most of the people are sensible enough to know when and where to talk what. But people like XYZ make the effort done by everyone else wash down the drains.

So coming back to the Big Questions I highlighted above I would say in one sentence - Drawing the Line is important. Its important to know what you are saying and how it will impact the other's feelings. It's important to know that there are some limits one is not supposed to cross. Do whatever you want in your private space but when you are in public learn to draw the line. There are people who love what you may write XYZ, go entice them, buddy them but don't disrespect others. Just think if Jasveena was nearby you at present you would probably be in a hospital. Same is the case with me.

Once again I will reiterate one should learn to draw the line in everything they do. Excess of anything is bad. It not only creates bitterness but gives vile ideas to many sadists which they take out on innocent victims. XYZ you may not know but you are contributing to the part of the problem inadvertently. There is a line one should never cross. Adult jokes and innuendos are ok only when they are said with fun and modesty and taken in the same manner of fun. After that they make the person saying them sick and sadist. XYZ in my definition you are sick sadist person. Look at your age at least.

I am concluding this blog with one simple message that social networks allures everybody but there is a networking etiquette that everyone should learn and follow. And one of the most basic etiquettes is to learn to draw the line. Lets hope you don't ever hurt anybody's sentiments. Lets pledge not to take anymore shit from such jackasses and if they don't draw the line we force them to draw the line for the sanity of others

Thanks,

Hi Everyone,

I still remember that when I was preparing for and giving my entrance exams for the B. Tech. admissions internet was considered a luxury. People used internet only in really needy situations as it was costly going to internet cafe and do your work. The reason why I am bringing this up is because with the spread of internet, not only knowledge has spread but also things which are not good for many people. One such thing is explicit adult content that is readily available on the Internet.

With the advent of digital technology internet and hence all the content associated with it has reached in the hands of the people in the form of mobile phones. Adults, teenagers, kids everyone has access to the adult material on the internet and there is no check whatsoever. Well there is a little bit of check but considering that even 6-7th grader kids have access to mobile phones now, whatever little check parents have on their kids and teenagers is nullified. On the brighter side there are families which exert great amount of check and control which is actually good.

The rape of the 5 year old girl is currently in news. Everyone is talking about the negligence and criminal actions of the police officers, the rapist and what not but what people are failing to comprehend is what led the person to commit the crime. Neither the media is highlighting this fact and nor the people are able to read between the lines and get to one of the root causes of the issue. The main root cause is that we have adopted many things from the western culture but have failed to change our mentality accordingly. I will not say whether it is right or wrong to view adult content because its a personal opinion but I will definitely say this that viewing should only be kept to viewing and not practiced on innocent victims. The doctors took out an oil bottle from inside that girl, really heinous way of putting viewing into action. What these criminals fail to understand is that what they view in the adult movies and sites is something that is done in a controlled environment and with mutual consent.

So coming back to the Indian society where the society is not so open and everyone has access to the adult content, what are other causes which are causing these heinous crimes to happen? The second most important cause after the unrestricted availability is the inability of the people to change their mindset accordingly. The society in West is quite open and hence these things to not affect people to that degree as they do in Indian society. In the above rape case, the criminal had several porn movies on his mobile and that's what led him to commit the crime. He could not separate the reel life from real life.

Sadly there is no check from the Government on the various adult sites that are rampant on the internet. There was a news article recently which questioned the government's inability to prevent the adult content from reaching the masses. Government can make all the laws they want but what they fail to realise is that when a person commits a crime he/ she never thinks that he/ she will be caught. Every criminal thinks that they are smart enough to avoid capture. So instead of passing laws government should try to address the root causes. Its time that the politicians get off their collective arses and do something towards removal of the root cause.

Everyone please remember reel life is different from real life. And I am saying this not only for adult content but for everything we view on television or internet. Many people get injured after watching some stunt and then trying out on their own. Lets keep the reel life and real life separate - reel life in the reels and real life in the reality.

Thanks,
